Pam and her brother Greg had decided to to go camping that weekend. They had picked out a nice spot, near the lake. It was a nice day, sunny and warm. They had gone hunting, fishing and cooked what they caught for dinner. Greg brought marshmallows and Pam brought the gram crackers and chocolate. They were sitting around telling jokes and stories, having a good old time. Who knew that "sibling bonding" could be so much fun. That was until Greg remembered that he had to talk with the park ranger about retrieving some more gear. Pam decided to stay at the campsite and read by the fire. Realizing that she had left the book in the tent, she went to retrieve it. As she was rummaging around she heard a noise.  "That was fast." she thought. Pam turned around and stuck her head out of the tent and that's when she saw it.

A great big Black bear was rummaging through some of their leftovers. She knew that they should have put it away after dinner. The bear was huge with black, beady eyes and long, sharp claws. Pam realized that staying around to see what the bear would do, wasn't the smartest idea. If she could get away from the campsite, then she could run to the Ranger's Cabin. In her haste, she step on some sticks, alerting the bear of her presence. It move toward her.

Pam froze on the spot and her heart stopped, as the bear rose to its hind legs. Scared, the bear swiped at her, catching her cheek. Pain woke her from her frozen state and she turned and ran. The tables had turned, the hunter had become the prey. She could hear the bear chasing after her as she ran. Ba-bum, ba-bum. Pam stopped and hid behind a fallen tree. Ba-bum, Ba-bum. Her heart was pumping out of her chest and all of her limbs were heavy. She was as white as a ghost. Laying down and keeping close to the ground was her only option. Ba-Bum, Ba-Bum. It was coming closer. BA-BUM, BA-BUM, BA-BUM, BA-BUM.

"This is it", she thought as she closed her eyes," if I play dead I may  get out of here alive." She could hear a growl echoing through the trees, as the bear gave up the hunt. It was gone. Ba...bum...ba...bum…

It is true that fear can take over the mind if you let it. Pam never made it out of the forest that night because before the bear had even taken a swing at her she had died of fright. A heart can only take so much strain.
